Papua New Guinea achieved independence in September 1975, and this coin was part of the inaugural national coinage series issued that same year — the first time the country had produced its own currency rather than relying on the Australian dollar. The Bank of Papua New Guinea commissioned the Royal Australian Mint to strike the series, a pragmatic arrangement given the lack of domestic minting infrastructure.
