Württemberg-Oels was a small Silesian branch of the Württemberg dynasty, established when Duke Sylvius Nimrod received the territory in 1647 — two years before the Peace of Westphalia formally reorganized Silesian landholdings. Sylvius II Frederick, his son, inherited a duchy caught between Habsburg authority and the lingering economic disruption of the Thirty Years' War. Large multiple-thaler pieces like this were rarely struck for circulation; they functioned primarily as diplomatic gifts and presentation pieces at a court that punched well above its political weight.
