Rudolph II moved his imperial court from Vienna to Prague in 1583 — just one year after this piece was struck — transforming Bohemia into the effective center of the Habsburg Empire and its considerable artistic patronage. The Budweis designation indicates minting authority connected to České Budějovice, a royal town whose mint rights were bound up in ongoing disputes between the crown and Bohemian estates throughout the 1570s and 1580s. Double thalers of this period were rarely intended for ordinary commerce; at nearly 57 grams of silver they functioned primarily as presentation pieces or high-value diplomatic currency.
