Philip II of Pomerania-Stettin ruled a duchy already in slow institutional decline, squeezed between Brandenburg's territorial ambitions and the gathering pressures that would detonate into the Thirty Years' War just two years after this coin's last striking date. He died in 1618 without a male heir, and the subsequent succession crisis handed Brandenburg the legal foothold it needed to absorb Pomerania entirely by 1637.
The double thaler format was rarely struck in Stettin and survives in very small numbers across all collections.
