Issued the year before Maximilian I received the hereditary electoral dignity confirmed by the Peace of Westphalia's precursor negotiations, this double thaler was struck at a moment when Bavarian political fortunes were ascending sharply. Maximilian had backed the Emperor in the Bohemian revolt, and the confiscated Palatine electorate was transferred to him in 1623 — this coin circulates in the immediate aftermath of that transfer, when his treasury was flush and his mint active.
The Dav ST#6094 designation places it firmly in the Davenport double thaler sequence, a series notorious for die-link complexity across Bavarian issues of the 1620s.
