Beschrijving voorzijde The Tetragrammaton (Name of Jehovah) radiating rays emanates from above, presiding over a central pedestal upon which rest a heraldic shield with helm, a sword, and a palm branch. To the left of the pedestal appears a crowned book, and to the right an Elector's hat above crossed swords, the whole flanked by a laurel wreath. The composition is rendered in high relief with careful baroque detail characteristic of Saxon medallic art of the mid-seventeenth century.

Aanvullende informatie

John George II completed the Moritzburg hunting lodge chapel in 1661, the same year this double thaler was struck — the coin almost certainly commemorates the chapel's consecration. The Albertinian electors had long used Moritzburg as both a retreat and a statement of dynastic prestige, and commissioning a commemorative thaler series was standard practice for major building completions at the Saxon court.

Schnee 912 is among the more elusive assignments in the chapel series. Strike quality on these large-format pieces varies considerably due to the detailed architectural die work demanded by the subject matter.
