Additional information

Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1560 until his death in 1586, presiding over the see during the sharpest decades of confessional conflict following the Council of Trent. Salzburg's prince-archbishops held both ecclesiastical and secular authority under the Holy Roman Empire, and large multiple-thaler pieces like this double thaler functioned as much as diplomatic gifts and prestige objects as they did as currency — circulating among courts rather than markets.

The Salzburg mint was among the most productive in the Alpine region, drawing on silver from the nearby Gastein and Rauriser valleys.
