Joachim III Frederick ruled Brandenburg from 1598 until his death in 1608, and his reign coincided with the early consolidation of Hohenzollern electoral power in the region. The double thaler format was rarely struck for circulation — pieces of this weight and value functioned primarily as presentation gifts and diplomatic currency, distributed at court to foreign envoys and Lutheran allies at a moment when confessional politics in the Empire were rapidly hardening ahead of the Thirty Years' War.
The multi-year date range of 1599–1602 suggests production across several dies, though surviving examples cluster tightly enough in style to indicate a single mint campaign at Berlin or Cölln.
