| Obverse description | Full-length armored effigy of János Kemény, Prince of Transylvania, standing facing right in three-quarter view, clad in elaborate Renaissance plate armor with richly decorated breastplate and pauldrons. The prince holds a scepter or baton in his right hand, the figure rendered in bold relief with fine engraving detail on the armor surfaces. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading IOAN : KEMENY D : G : PRI : TRA °, identifying the ruler by name and title. The portrait exhibits the characteristic hammered craftsmanship of the Kolozsvár mint in the mid-seventeenth century. |
