| Obverse description | Armored equestrian figure of Duke Henry Julius in full plate armor, depicted in a rearing pose facing left, holding a drawn sword aloft in his right hand and controlling the horse with his left. The horse is richly caparisoned with elaborate trappings, and the duke wears a plumed helmet. The scene is rendered in high relief in the late Renaissance style typical of Brunswick coinage of this period. The circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, reading HENRICUS IULIUS D:G POST EPIS HALB ET MIND DUX BRUNS ET LUN, identifying the ruler by his titles as Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg and Postulate Bishop of Halberstadt and Minden. |
