Bethlen's klippe issues of the 1620s were produced largely as presentation pieces — gifts to foreign diplomats and Protestant allies during his sustained campaigns against the Habsburgs. By 1627, he had already fought three wars against Emperor Ferdinand II and was negotiating the Peace of Pressburg; coins of this type circulated in courtly rather than commercial hands.
The square-flan format was a deliberate signal of prestige, not a minting accident. Resch catalogued multiple die combinations across his 384D–389 sequence, meaning examples vary meaningfully in die alignment and field quality even within the same nominal type.
