Three lines of Latin inscription are engraved on the base of the monument recording the birth and death dates of Frederick Augustus I: NAT XII MAY MDCLXX, OB I FEBR MDCCXXXIII, and the denomination 2 TH COUR. |

Frederick August I — known outside Saxony as Augustus II of Poland — died in Warsaw on 1 February 1733, and the Saxon mints moved quickly to produce memorial coinage before the political situation clarified. His death triggered an immediate succession crisis: his son's claim to the Polish throne was contested, and France backed Stanisław Leszczyński, dragging Europe into the War of the Polish Succession within months. The memorial double thaler was struck while that war was still unresolved.
Dav GT II#2663 places this squarely within the German thaler series, and Schnee's attribution confirms it among the more carefully documented Saxon memorial issues of the period.
