Ferdinand of Bavaria held the bishopric of Münster from 1612 until his death in 1650, simultaneously occupying the sees of Cologne, Hildesheim, Paderborn, and Liège at various points — a concentration of ecclesiastical power that made him one of the most politically consequential princes of the Holy Roman Empire. This double thaler was struck during the Thirty Years' War, when Münster's finances were under severe strain and large-denomination silver coinage served diplomatic and military payment functions that small change simply could not.
