Anthony Günter of Oldenburg was one of the longest-reigning German territorial counts of the seventeenth century, holding power from 1603 until his death in 1667. His administration of the county coincided with the Thirty Years' War, which devastated much of the Holy Roman Empire while Oldenburg, through careful diplomacy and geographic position near the North Sea coast, managed to remain largely outside the fighting. Large-module silver issues like this double thaler served diplomatic and prestige functions as much as commercial ones.
The undated span 1614–1622 reflects production across multiple die marriages rather than a single campaign.
