Albert IV of Brandenburg — better known as Albrecht von Brandenburg — held the Archbishopric of Magdeburg simultaneously with the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Bishopric of Halberstadt, an accumulation of offices that required a substantial papal dispensation and an enormous financial arrangement with the Fugger banking house to secure. It was precisely this debt to the Fuggers, and the indulgence sales organized to repay it, that directly provoked Luther's Ninety-Five Theses in 1517.
This double thaler dates to seven years after that rupture, struck as the Reformation was actively destabilizing Albrecht's territorial authority in Magdeburg.
