This double thaler commemorates the composer Christoph Willibald Gluck, born in 1714 in the Upper Palatinate — then Bavarian territory — and issued as part of Bavaria's extended series honoring figures associated with the kingdom. The series was a deliberate cultural project under Ludwig I, though this piece appeared in 1848, the same year revolutionary upheaval forced Ludwig's abdication in March following street protests in Munich.
The timing meant production was likely disrupted or curtailed, and pieces from this final year of the series tend to appear less frequently in dealer stock than earlier issues.
