This piece was struck in 1871 as a pattern — almost certainly in connection with the completion of Ulm Minster's spire, though that project would not formally conclude until 1890. The Stuttgart Mint produced occasional gold pattern strikes of existing silver types as presentation pieces, and the double thaler denomination itself was already being phased out of the German monetary system: the newly unified Reich's introduction of the mark-based coinage in 1871–73 rendered the thaler and gulden parallel standards obsolete almost immediately after this coin was struck.
At 68.77g in gold, this is a showpiece, not a circulating denomination. The Schlumberger reference 927.5 places it within a small handful of documented specimens.
