This piece was struck as a pattern — never adopted for circulation — at a moment when Württemberg's participation in any unified German coinage system was still politically unresolved. The Ulm Cathedral, whose construction had been abandoned for centuries and was finally nearing completion in the 1870s after a Prussian-backed revival effort, made an unusually local choice of subject for what might otherwise have been a dynastic commemorative.
Karl I's reign saw Württemberg absorbed into the German Empire in 1871, which rendered any independent Württemberg monetary planning moot almost immediately after this piece was produced.
