Beschrijving voorzijde Panoramic bird's-eye view of the walled city of Regensburg (Ratisbona), rendered in fine engraved detail with numerous church spires, towers, and municipal buildings visible along the skyline. In the upper field, two putti or angels flank a crowned imperial double-headed eagle coat of arms surmounted by a radiant all-seeing eye within a triangle, rays emanating downward over the cityscape. The Latin legend NON DORMIT QUI NOS CUSTODIT arcs around the upper periphery, and the city's Latin name RATISBONA appears in a cartouche at the base of the design. A mint mark 'B' is visible beneath the cartouche.

Beschrijving keerzijde Laureate and draped bust of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I facing right, wearing armor with an elaborately detailed mantle decorated with ornamental clasps and rich drapery rendered in the Baroque style. The portrait is finely modeled with flowing, curled hair beneath the laurel wreath, and the truncation bears the engraver's signature I. L. OEXLEIN f. The circumscribed Latin legend identifying the emperor runs around the upper and right periphery of the field.

Aanvullende informatie

Regensburg's double thaler issues of this period were struck while the city hosted the Immerwährender Reichstag — the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire, which had sat there without recess since 1663. The city's coinage carried unusual political weight for a Free Imperial City; these heavy silver pieces circulated among diplomats, princes' envoys, and imperial functionaries who conducted the Empire's business within its walls.

The Davenport reference places this among the large German silver series, and the extended date range reflects sequential die use rather than continuous striking. Regensburg's mint output was modest, and surviving examples in problem-free condition are genuinely scarce.
