Bremen struck this double thaler in 1650 to mark the Peace of Westphalia celebrations, the treaties signed at Osnabrück and Münster in 1648 having finally ended the Thirty Years' War. The city had suffered considerably under the conflict — Swedish and Imperial forces repeatedly contested control of the surrounding territory, and Bremen's status as a Free Imperial City was itself a subject of diplomatic wrangling resolved only by the Westphalian settlement.
The Jungk reference places this among a small cluster of commemorative heavy silver issues from Bremen in this period. The 1650 date corresponds to the formal Imperial ratification ceremonies, not the original signing.
