Bremen struck this heavy double thaler during the closing years of the Thirty Years' War, when the city was navigating a precarious neutrality between Swedish-controlled northern Germany and Imperial forces pressing from the south. The city's merchant oligarchy had strong incentive to maintain a credible, high-weight silver currency precisely when confidence in most German coinage had collapsed — the Kipper und Wipperzeit debasement crisis of 1619–1623 had left a generation of traders deeply suspicious of anything underweight.
The KM#102.2 designation distinguishes this from the closely related 102.1 variety. Jungk's cataloguing of Bremen civic coinage remains the authoritative reference for separating these issues.
