Magdeburg's 1624 double thaler was struck less than seven years before the city's catastrophic destruction in May 1631, when Imperial and League forces under Tilly sacked it with a ferocity that killed upwards of 20,000 residents and left the city a ruin for years. The municipal coinage of this period reflects Magdeburg's last decade as a functioning civic financial authority before that erasure.
The Schrötter reference noting a variety suggests minor die differences exist within this issue — not uncommon for large-format silver struck by municipal mints operating without the production consistency of territorial workshops.
