| Beschrijving voorzijde | Double-headed imperial eagle displayed in high relief occupies the central field, its wings spread and feathers rendered in fine detail. The arms of Hamburg — a white castle on a red field — appear on a shield superimposed at the eagle's breast. A crown surmounts the eagle's heads. The circular Latin legend reads VERBVM DOMINI MANET IN ÆTERNUM (The Word of the Lord Endureth Forever), a motto closely associated with the Lutheran Reformation and widely adopted by Protestant cities. The coin's broad flan and toothed border are characteristic of large-format hammered silver coinage of the late sixteenth century. |
