Juan de Homedes served as Grand Master of the Order from 1536 to 1553, a tenure defined almost entirely by the aftermath of the 1522 loss of Rhodes and the scramble to establish Malta as a defensible base. The Order received Malta from Charles V in 1530, and the earliest coinage struck there — this issue among them — was produced under genuinely uncertain conditions, with the Knights still unsure whether Malta would be a permanent seat or a temporary arrangement.

Restelli 21 is among the more frequently encountered attributions for Homedes-era silver, though die alignment and punch variation across the series are considerable enough that individual specimens often require careful comparison against reference plates.
