Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, a Portuguese nobleman who served as Grand Master from 1722 to 1736, oversaw one of the more ambitious building programs in the Order's Maltese history — Fort Manoel, begun in 1723, the same year this coin was struck. Funding that construction while maintaining the Order's naval operations against Ottoman and Barbary corsairs put genuine pressure on the mint at Valletta.
The 2 Tari sat at a practical denomination for everyday Mediterranean commerce. Vilhena's issues are generally well-documented by Restelli, though die marriages across his silver series still reward careful attribution.
