| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, featuring the escutcheon of Portugal with its characteristic arrangement of quinas (five shields bearing bezants) and the bordure of castles, surmounted by an ornate crown. The mint letters A and M (denoting Malacca) appear flanking the shield to left and right respectively, serving as the mint mark for this issue. The date 1633 is inscribed in the lower exergue beneath the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The style is characteristic of Portuguese colonial hammered coinage of the early seventeenth century. |
