| Beschrijving keerzijde | A paradise whydah bird (Vidua paradisaea) is depicted perched on a bare tree branch at the left, its characteristically elongated tail feathers sweeping gracefully across the upper field to the right. The date 1985 appears in the upper field above the bird. The numeral 2 is prominently displayed in the centre of the field, with the denomination legend TAMBALA arching along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials P.V. appear discreetly to the left of the central numeral. |

The magnetic variety distinguishes this from the earlier KM#8.2 bronze issue — copper-plated steel was adopted as Malawi, like many developing nations in the 1980s, faced rising copper commodity prices that made bronze coinage economically unsustainable. The plated steel core kept production costs down while maintaining the coin's appearance in circulation.
