Banco del Ecuador was a private commercial bank headquartered in Guayaquil, not a central bank — Ecuador would not establish a true central bank until 1927. These private-issue notes circulated alongside those of several competing regional banks under a system of free banking that was notoriously chaotic, with exchange rates between different banks' paper fluctuating daily in coastal markets.
The American Bank Note Company printed the S257 series at its Manhattanville facility. ABNC's relationship with Ecuadorian private banks stretched back decades, and they frequently reused plate elements across Latin American clients — worth checking whether the border architecture here appears on contemporaneous Bolivian or Peruvian issues from the same shop.
