Deventer's 1578 siege coinage was struck under direct military pressure, as Spanish Habsburg forces under the Duke of Parma tightened their grip on the rebellious IJssel cities during the early phase of the Dutch Revolt. The city resorted to copper emergency issues when silver supplies were cut off — a predictable consequence of prolonged blockade.
Vanhoudt 526 is one of several Low Countries siege types where attribution debates persist due to die-sharing and improvised production. The CNM reference anchors this firmly to Deventer rather than the occasionally confused Zwolle issues from the same campaign.
