This piece is not a Dutch colonial issue in the conventional sense — it is a deliberate imitation of the Gelderland 2 stuivers, struck in the Dutch East Indies to address chronic small-change shortages in the archipelago. The VOC and later colonial authorities tolerated and at times encouraged such imitative coinage when metropolitan supply lines failed to keep local markets liquid.
By 1786, Gelderland's own stuiver coinage had long been debased and irregular, making it a practical template for copies that needed to pass at face value without close scrutiny.
