Obverse description The first coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria occupies the central field, depicting a rampant lion on a shield beneath a five-pointed star, the whole flanked by two symmetrical sprays of wheat ears tied at the base with a ribbon bearing the date inscription '9 IX 1944', referencing the communist takeover of Bulgaria. The circular legend НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА curves along the upper periphery and БЪЛГАРИЯ along the lower, separated by small five-pointed stars at each side.
