Reckem was a tiny lordship in the castellany of Lille, and its right to strike coinage was a constant source of friction with neighboring authorities who considered such minor seigneurial minting an encroachment on their monetary prerogatives. Ernest of Lynden held the lordship during one of the most monetarily chaotic periods the southern Low Countries had yet seen, with Spanish administration struggling to suppress the flood of substandard billon from exactly these small jurisdictions.
The Metz-type attribution places this piece within a broad family of northeastern French and Low Countries small change that circulated interchangeably regardless of issuing authority — a practical reality that rendered the lordship's name on the coin almost irrelevant to the people spending it.
