Batenburg was a small lordship on the Maas in Gelderland, and its coinage authority was legally contested for much of the early seventeenth century. The Lords of Batenburg exploited the jurisdictional ambiguity of the Holy Roman Empire's minting rights to strike coins that frequently undercut the weight and fineness standards set by the imperial recesses — a practice that drew repeated complaints from neighboring provinces during precisely this period.

The 1621–1622 window coincides with renewed Dutch-Spanish hostilities following the expiration of the Twelve Years' Truce.
