| Descripción del anverso | A boldly rendered double-headed eagle displayed within a four-lobed (quadrilobe) border, the heads facing outward to left and right with open beaks, the wings spread and the body covered in detailed scale-like feathering. The eagle's talons are visible at the base of the design. The entire device is enclosed within the raised quadrilobe frame, with the circular outer legend separated from the central field by a beaded inner border. The composition reflects the Gothic heraldic style characteristic of mid-13th-century Flemish coinage. |

Margaret II ruled Flanders through decades of dynastic conflict, most consequentially the War of the Succession of Flanders that pitted her sons by two marriages — the Dampierre and Avesnes families — against each other in a struggle settled only by the Treaty of Peronne in 1256. This sterling-type coinage, struck in the final years of her reign, reflects Flemish adoption of the English sterling penny as a monetary model, a deliberate policy that facilitated trade across the North Sea wool markets on which Flemish cloth manufacture depended.
Margaret died in 1280, leaving Flanders to Guy of Dampierre after a reign of nearly fifty years.
