Obverse description A helmeted lion sejant facing left, depicted in high relief within a cusped inner circle formed by a ring of sixteen arcs, its forepaws raised and claws extended in a heraldic attitude. The lion wears a crowned helmet, characteristic of the Flemish comital iconography of the 14th century. The field between the cusped circle and the outer beaded border is occupied by the circumscribed legend in uncial Gothic lettering. The overall design is executed in the bold, somewhat stylised manner typical of hammered Flemish silver coinage of the reign of Louis II de Male.
