| Beschrijving keerzijde | A detailed architectural view of Akershus Fortress in Oslo, depicted prominently above a rocky outcropping surrounded by water on all sides, evoking the coastal defensive character of the stronghold. The fortress is rendered with towers and fortification walls in a baroque engraving style, emphasizing its strategic and symbolic importance to the Norwegian realm. This reverse design commemorates the fortress as a national monument and symbol of royal authority. |

Frederik III issued this coin in the immediate aftermath of the 1660 constitutional revolution that abolished the Danish-Norwegian nobility's tax privileges and transformed the monarchy from elective to hereditary absolute rule. The speciedaler series of this period was directly tied to that political realignment — a newly absolute king required coinage that projected sovereign authority on a scale the old elective monarchy had never attempted.
At over 57 grams, the 2 speciedaler was among the largest silver denominations circulating in Scandinavian trade. Very few were struck, and Rønning documents only a handful of confirmed survivors.
