The "Strength and Stay" title derives from a phrase used by Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in a 1997 speech describing Queen Elizabeth II — a rare public expression of sentiment from a man not given to them. Gibraltar's mint has aggressively pursued royal commemorative issues since the 1990s, occupying a niche between official Royal Mint output and outright fantasy coinage. This piece sits in that commercial grey zone: legal tender by Gibraltar statute, but produced almost entirely for the collector market with no meaningful circulation history.
