A key lies in the exergue beneath the lion, symbolising Gibraltar. The Latin legend 'MONETA REGIA GIBRALTARICA' arcs around the upper field, the Roman numeral date 'MCMLXXXIX' appears in the lower central field above the exergue line, and the commemorative inscription 'SESQUICENTENARIUM' curves along the lower border, marking the 150th anniversary. |
