| Descrizione del rovescio | A cruciform arrangement of four crowned shields dominates the reverse field, each shield bearing arms associated with the Isle of Man: a Viking longship (top), a raven (left), a lion passant (bottom), and a pair of sea-horses (right). At the centre of the cross, the Manx triskelion appears within a beaded circle, with ornamental fleurs-de-lis and foliage filling the angles between the shields. The Manx motto QUOCUNQUE JECERIS STABIT is inscribed around the periphery, and the date 1986 appears in the lower exergue, separated by the central triskelion device. The whole design is framed by a braided or cable border. |

The 1986 double sovereign was struck by Pobjoy Mint under contract — an unusual arrangement, since sovereign-series gold had been the near-exclusive province of the Royal Mint for most of its modern history. Pobjoy produced this issue for the Isle of Man, which had been issuing its own sovereign-format gold since 1973, exploiting the island's status as a Crown dependency with independent coinage rights.
The Maklouf portrait — introduced across Commonwealth issues in 1985 — replaced Raphael Maklouf's own earlier trial work and became the standard effigy for a decade.
