Beschrijving keerzijde A bold, modernist reinterpretation of the classic St. George and the Dragon motif, engraved by Paul Day. St. George, depicted as a heavily armoured knight, is shown on horseback driving a lance downward into the prostrate dragon, whose large membranous wings and clawed limbs are rendered in sharp, stylized relief. The composition fills the field dynamically, with the rearing horse occupying the right portion and the defeated dragon sprawling across the lower left. The date 2012 appears vertically along the left inner border, and the engraver's initials PJD are incuse in the lower right field.

Aanvullende informatie

The Diamond Jubilee year prompted the Royal Mint to revive the double sovereign as a commemorative vehicle — a denomination that had effectively vanished from regular production decades earlier. Elizabeth II became only the second British monarch to reach a Diamond Jubilee, the first being Victoria in 1897, whose own reign had seen the double sovereign produced as a standard circulation piece.

The Spink reference SD8 places this firmly in the specialist sovereign series rather than the mainstream decimal catalogue.
