Gibraltar's multi-year sovereign program has leaned heavily on RAF commemorative themes, and this 2015 piece marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain — the 1940 Luftwaffe air campaign that represented the first major military operation in history fought entirely by air forces. The RAF's Fighter Command, outnumbered and operating from battered airfields, held long enough that Hitler indefinitely postponed Operation Sea Lion, the planned amphibious invasion of southern England.
Gibraltar itself was under near-constant threat during the same period, its airstrip repeatedly targeted by Vichy French aircraft operating from Morocco.
