The Isle of Man has no particular military or strategic connection to D-Day — the commemoration is a licensing exercise, with Pobjoy Mint historically producing commemorative issues for the island that have little to do with Manx history. The "2 Sovereigns" denomination itself is a fiction; the Isle of Man's legal tender status for such pieces is largely nominal, a framework that allows bullion and commemorative coins to be issued under Crown Dependency authority without Westminster oversight.
The 80th anniversary year does mark something concrete: by June 2024, fewer than a dozen D-Day veterans were still alive to attend the Normandy ceremonies.
