Christian II struck these klippings during his attempt to reclaim the Scandinavian throne after his deposition in 1523. Minted at Akershus under emergency conditions, the square-cut fabric reflects the speed and desperation of his Norwegian campaign rather than any established mint practice. His reconquest ultimately failed; he was captured in 1532 and spent the remaining 27 years of his life imprisoned at Sønderborg and later Kalundborg Castle.
