Additional information

Frederik III was elected king in 1648 under conditions that no Danish monarch had faced before — or would face again. The nobility extracted a formal Haandfæstning, a coronation charter so restrictive it represented the high-water mark of aristocratic power in Danish history. Frederik signed it, then spent the next two decades systematically dismantling everything he had agreed to, culminating in the absolute monarchy of 1660. This coin predates that reversal entirely; the "Rex Electus" title on the issue reflects his status before formal coronation, a transitional moment the dies recorded with unusual precision.
