Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Danish royal arms — the three passant lions of Denmark displayed on an ornately mantled shield surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials. The shield is flanked by elaborate scrollwork and rests within a plain inner circle. The peripheral legend, struck in Roman capitals, reads FRIDE RICVS Z :D:G: DANIE, identifying Frederik II as King of Denmark by the grace of God. The legend is distributed around the coin in four segments separated by the inner circle border, characteristic of late sixteenth-century Danish hammered coinage.
