Christian III struck this issue in the same year he formally established Lutheranism as Denmark's state religion — a consolidation of royal and ecclesiastical power that ended decades of civil war known as the Count's Feud. The Ribe mint, one of Denmark's oldest, was operating under renewed royal authority following that conflict, during which monetary production had been severely disrupted by competing factions.
Billon coinage of this transitional moment circulated into a kingdom still reorganizing its institutions after the imprisonment of the Catholic bishops in 1536.
