Reverse description The denomination and date are arranged in three horizontal lines across the central field, flanked on each side by decorative ornaments — rosettes on KM#336.1 issues and stars on KM#336.2 issues. The mintmark appears below the date in the lower field. The design is contained within a beaded border along the rim, imparting a neat, utilitarian appearance characteristic of mid-19th century Scandinavian coinage.

Norway's 2 Skilling denomination was already an anachronism by the time Carl XV authorized this issue. The skilling system had been under pressure since Norway adopted a decimal currency framework in 1816, and the country would abandon it entirely with the krone reform of 1875. These pieces were struck knowing full well they had perhaps five years of monetary life remaining.
