Carl XIV Johan — born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal under Napoleon — had by the 1830s settled into a deeply conservative reign that bore little resemblance to his revolutionary origins. The Skilling Banco denominations of this period were tied to the Riksgälds system, a parallel currency structure that had emerged from Sweden's wartime debt crises of the early 19th century, creating a confusing dual-currency circulation that persisted until the riksdaler reforms of 1855 finally swept it away.
