Reuss-Schleiz was one of the smaller Reuss principalities in Thuringia, all of which shared the peculiar dynastic tradition of naming every male heir Henry — distinguished only by sequential numbering that ran continuously across all branches of the family, regardless of generation. Henry LXII ruled the Schleiz line from 1818 until his death in 1854, meaning this 1855 issue was almost certainly struck posthumously under regency, as Henry LXIII had not yet reached majority. The billon composition reflects the low-denomination coinage norms of the German states in the years immediately preceding Zollverein monetary standardization.
