The inscription reads 以南鐐八片換小判一両, conveying the monetary guarantee that eight pieces of Nanryō silver are exchangeable for one ryō koban. The characters are rendered in bold, deeply struck regular script (kaisho) relief against a granular, textured background surface characteristic of Edo-period hammered coinage. The legend is the dominant and sole design element, reflecting the purely utilitarian and fiduciary nature of this Tokugawa-era currency. |
